Week 5 - Term Test 1

~~~~~~WEEK 5~~~~~~
Today's outline:
  • proof using contrapositive
  • proof using contradiction
  • proof for existence
  • proof about a sequence
We had our midterm exam this week. It was my first exam in UofT so I was nervous before the exam. The past exam that was given to us helped me out by getting some knowledge on what kind of questions come in the exam.  My test was okay because I know I got some of the answers wrong. I liked the “keep calm and carry on” right after the test. It made my day better.
It was the first time for me to study something new right after a test so I was very exhausted and tired. I was not fully attentive in class and ended up taking this picture:
We started the class off with learning about contrapositives and contradictions. I learned that contrapositives are a way or proving statements. Moreover, sometimes using the contrapositive to prove is easier than the normal way. I understood this concept but I think I should practice using this a bit more before I can fully understand it. We then went onto learning about contradiction and my mind was zoned out from then onwards. There were a lot of people talking around me and a person in front of me was playing online FIFA.
The tutorial this week was easy and I understood how to attempt proof questions. I think I did well on the quiz.
Looking forward to the long weekend!
Week 4 - Folding Exercise
~~~~~~WEEK 4~~~~~~

Today's outline:

  • Bi-implications
  • Transitivity
  • Mix Quantifiers
  • Proofs
  • Problem solving session

This week we started off class with practice questions to review the previous lecture. I found this helpful because it got me involved in class immediately and for me personally the best way I study is by being involved in class and it helps me staying awake and interested in class.

We started by learning about Bi-implications which I found easy to understand. The negation of bi-implication is a bit tricky but I managed to do it after I went over the notes. We then learned about transitivity. I found transitivity easy but it took me time to understand the Venn diagrams but I managed to understand them as well. We then learned about mixed quantifiers. It took time to understand but I managed to. I like the question because it was funny.

However I did not manage to understand the mathematical examples that were given to us because the professor was going too fast at the time. I learned about proofs and how they are important for science. As a future computer scientist I should believe nothing until it is proven. A proof is an argument that convinces someone who is logical, careful, and precise. We first understand why something is true, and then we use a proof to share our understanding with others, to save them time and effort. Proofs can only be made with understanding.

I liked the real life proof example because I think I can understand much more when it refers to English rather than symbolic language.

We then did a folding exercise to learn about problem solving. We were asked to fold a piece of paper in a certain way and count the bends and which direction they are in. We looked for patterns in bends to determine what could be the amount of bends for ‘n’ bends. This exercise was done in a group and the group idea was good because all of us helped each other out. We used ‘V’ and ‘ᴧ’ to represent the bends but I used binary codes to represent them because it was easier to read. We managed to figure out a solution for the pattern in the bends but we realized we wrote it all backwards but we still understood the concept.

The tutorial this week was easy and I managed to do the quiz without any problem. I had revised my laws from week 3’s lecture and managed to do both the quiz and the tutorial without any problem.  However, I did find the negation of “Every dog has its days, or perhaps its cat.” I found that tough and got help from a friend to help me understand.

I will look forward to attending office hours because there is a CSC165 Term test is next week.

Week 3

Blog post #3!

~~~~~~WEEK 3~~~~~~
Today's outline:
  • Conjunctions
  • Disjunctions
  • Negations
  • Truth Tables
  • Manipulation laws
We started this class learning about conjunctions and disjunctions. I understood what both meant and the Ferrari example helped me fully understand the concept behind each one. I also learned the symbolic representation for conjunctions and disjunctions.
I found this joke during class very amusing. It was a good way to lighten up the mood.
A logician’s wife is having a baby. The
doctor immediately hands the newborn to
the dad.
His wife asks impatiently: “So, is it a boy or
a girl?”
The logician replies: “Yes.”
We then went onto learning about negation. I have learned it in MAT137 so I did not have trouble understanding. I found the negation exercise very easy and a confidence booster for myself. I usually am silent during class and do not participate as much but this exercise changed that. I started participating in class and I ended up learning from it as well.
However, I did not fully understand what scope meant and was left confused after class. Furthermore, I did not understand the implying part (Q->R) on the truth tables.
Next, we learned about De Morgan’s law. I understood it completely and have no difficulty in it. We also learned about Commutative laws, Associative law, Distributive law, Identity law, and Idempotent law. I did not understand them during class because I thought the professor Zhang was going over them too quickly, but I revised them at home and I understood them.
I did not understand this week’s tutorial properly. I think there should be example of a question which should be done; it would help me understand how to attempt the question and how to construct the answer. I did not fully understand this week’s tutorial and I know I did not do the quiz well. I will study more for the upcoming tutorial and I will do well hopefully.
Week 2
Blog post 2!
~~~~~~WEEK 2~~~~~~

Today's outline:

  • Quantifiers, verify / false
  • Sentences, statements
  • Predicates
  • Implications,  equivalence

This week I learned about the following topics:
-Visualization with Venn Diagram
-Quantifiers as claims about sets
-Evaluating quantified claims
-Difference between sentences and statements
-Implications
-Vacuous truth

I enjoy the regular jokes that Professor Larry Zhang makes during class. Furthermore, I enjoyed the practice questions on sentences and statements because I was involved in it and I learned a lot of things that I did not know before.

Last week I was not very confident because I did not understand everything because I have no programming experience. I am taking CSC108 to learn the basics of programming which also helps me understand some of the material in this course. This week I felt confident about the material covered this week and I understood everything.

I am also taking MAT137Y1 along with CSC165. We were doing Logic in MAT137. This course has helped me in MAT137 because I did not completely understand the topic in MAT137. We studied the same topic in CSC165 and I understood the things I did not understand in MAT137.

The tutorial started off by realizing I was sitting in some course which was studying Induction. The room which I was assigned to was already booked by some other professor teaching some EAS course. After that situation was sorted out we went to a different class for the tutorial. I enjoyed this weeks tutorial class because it was short and simple. I learned how to properly make Venn Diagrams and label them properly. The quiz was easy and I saw a person complete it even before I finished reading the question which was surprising to me.

Blog post 1!

This is my CSC165H1F SLOG. :)
